I think moves are afoot to reclassify space technology as outside of ITAR which would be good for all involved.

I cannot find the post but I think GL is interested in it for rad tolerance for reasons of ther than space CERN rings a bell.

Re: Curious about Curiousity
ive just finishe writting my blog first part about my video image processing system for people with low vision, its prolly not as sophisticated as this but it does do bilinear interpolation and its taken me ages to write about it in an aproachable form, its less complex than it sounds but it does involve some tricky code.I was reading it and couldnt work out how it worked at first.

GL,

I suggest you go to RADECs (in Europe), or MAPLD (in USA) if you wish to learn.

As far as space technology is concerned, in the USA, it falls under ITAR rules and restrictions.  Contact your local Aerospace & Defense Xilinx Sales person.

Design West
It looks like there will be a lot of us talking about radiation and design for space flight at Design West I will be giving two sessions on using FPGA's in space.

Steve, perhaps you could have a word with your guys, you know when XST goes 'ha ha look youve put a semi-colon on line 65 instead of a colon' why cannot we have
a 'yeah o.k, why don't you change it yourself if you are so clever?' mode?
and.. it should know that when its three in the morning you are likely to forget how to spell architecture.
and after every three errors it should come up with a message saying  'why dont you go outside and play for a bit?'

Re: Curious about Curiousity

@Garcia-Lasheras: I don't have additional public information on the actual Xilinx Virtex-II device used in the MAHLI DEA package but I'll investigate and see if I can find out more for you. Meanwhile, here's a cool link to some rad-hard research and SEU mitigation testing done by JPL and Xilinx:

SEU Mitigation Testing of Xilinx Virtex II FPGAs

In addition, here's some info on rad-hard and radiation-tolerant versions of various Xilinx All Programmable device families:

QPro Virtex 2.5V Radiation-Hardened FPGAs

Re: Curious about Curiousity
@Steve: Is the Virtex device used a radiation-hardened one? Do you know if the logic for the Microblaze is using some kind of TMR?

I'm strongly interested in rad-hard techniques and this is a very interesting post.

Max,

Thanks for the comment. You probably should insert the pre-landing video that NASA created for Curiosity: "7 Minutes of Terror."

Curious about Curiousity
Hi Steve -- this was a very interesting blog to me because I was out at the JPL a couple of years ago giving a talk about the effects of radiation on electronics parts and systems and I got to see the Curiousity Rover close up (well, it was in a seperate room behind glass moving around doing "stuff" -- but I was as close as I could get with my nose pressed against the window).

When they showed me an animation of how they planned on using the "sky crane" to land it I thought "You're braver men than me!" (grin)

If you're a seasoned FPGA user, you know that one of the real savings in system development time is the time you gain by not needing to do the physical design of a nanometer IC.
Luke Miller was not always an HLS advocate. It seems he had some bad experiences with an earlier tool. "My heart was all walled up and needed counseling." Fortunately, he's getting useful work out of the Xilinx Vivado HLS tool.
The secret of using the Xilinx Zynq SoC to quickly develop systems is to use the ARM processors to execute code; find code that needs further acceleration through profiling; then configure part of the FPGA fabric as an accelerator and couple it to the executing code.
