@Max: that's why you can maneuver through your office so well - you get practice in your closet at home! :-)
OK Chaps and Chappesses -- I have to run -- lots to do -- no tme to do it all
Thanks for joinging me
C U next week
@All: I need to sign off now. I hope everyone has a great Friday and weekend. Also, I will not make next weeks' chat. I have a lunch meeting in Madison and don't think I'll get out early enough to swing by Max's office before it ends. So, have a great couple of weeks!
Anyway I've got to run, catch you later, new blog on Monday I think
@adam: "...maybe a weekly poll based on the ratio of the engineers number of shoes to the wifes..."
I can barely get in our bedroom closet for the #$%^ shoes
Jezmo - Yeah, I would be the only one wearing the hat.
@Adam: that is a PERFECT poll! :-)
Max maybe a weekly poll based on the ratio of the engineers number of shoes to the wifes
Max - Talking about is better than buying
I don't really think she would be keen on a beamy hat
@Brian that did make me chuckle
If there's one thing Gina can talk about it's shoes ... it's getting her to stop talking about them thats the trick!!!
Cool she would like someone to talk to about shoes or whatever :)
I don't think my wife Gina will be coming -- but she may do -- especially if Christine is coming -- Gina loves animals -- they could hang out together (woudl she want a Propeller Beanie?)
@Adam: Re: "the ladies do like them though ;)"
This isn't Vegas - what happens in San Jose might not stay there :-)
@jezmo I had not thought about it will ask
@JezzmoSSL, If I go, my wife will as well.
@adam: I personally don't own a suit -- I think "Californian Casual" is the usual order of the day, but you can wear a suit if you wish - just pick one whose colors complement your APP Beanie Hat :-)
Is anyone else bringing their partner? Christine want to come for the trip
@max no just bad typing while drinking and eating
They won't let you in if you wear a suit
the ladies do like them though ;)
@adam: "@brain..."
Freudian slip?
Oops, "aloud" should have been allowed. My bad...
@Adam: no suits aloud! (I am hopeful that someday ties will be illegal :-)
@brain definately not unless it is a lodge do
@Brian should I wear a suit to present ????
Someone please report back to me if Adam wears a suit and tie to the "pub"! We will have Max revoke his APP membership :-)
@Jezmo: "My heads on the wrong way round !"
Oh, you mean in the photo ... silly me :-)
Will there be real beer at the conference? Maybe you will need to fly some in special...
And holy cow! I just noticed... Adam isn't wearing a suit in the photo, either!! :-)
@Brian I think before and after would be better
@Duane: "Max - I must have really had a lot to drink because I'm not quite recalling that meeting."
A lot of Americans are like that when they have their firsr real (English) beer....
Max - It was my limited ability to actually read instructions that fooled me.
Sorry guys - just quickly pasted your APP photos. I thought it would be a funny after Design West photo :-)
My head is looking behind me for the next beer.
@jezmossl: "My heads on the wrong way round !"
Well, I didn;t like to say anything, but ... :-)
So when it said "charactes" that's what fooled you?
My heads on the wrong way round !
Max - I must have really had a lot to drink because I'm not quite recalling that meeting.
Yeah mine got a bit truncated, but I am sure it will be fine
Adam - I did that too. I was thinking 800 words.
@Max first submission just sent, funny when I wrote the abstract I misread characters for words
One beanie to rule them all, one beanie to find them, one beanie to bring them all.. This is sounding familiar...
I am not sleeping on the floor (again)
@jezmossl that is a very good point
@william: "Add Thought control sensors to the beanies"
Funnily enugh, one of the design decisions I talked about with the CO of Synapse is tha tthere will b eno master controller (no single point of failure) -- and th edesign decision is to prevent "One Beanie from Binding them and Controling Them"
What we need to do is sort out if we can get group rates at some hotel
@brian: "@Max: check your UBM email real quick - I sent a [future] Design West Photo :-) "
Nothing there -- resend to my max@CliveMaxfield.com email
Add Thought control sensors to the beanies --
I could see some real possibilities combining quad-copters, SNAP, and WAOFB beanies.
@JezmoSSL: "What you are saying is its drinking trousers and beanies for the week :)"
Trousers optional :-)
It sounds like it is going to be lots of fun ;)
@JezmoSSL: "I can tell...this is going to be so sophistimicated a gathering :)"
You betcha ass!
(And the scary thing is that we are the cream-de-la-cream :-)
What you are saying is its drinking trousers and beanies for the week :)
I alread have my best man (APP Member Brian here in this chat) on the case....
I think THIS ONE would make a great starting point
I can tell...this is going to be so sophistimicated a gathering :)
@rfindley - -let's chat after this chat
@Max: check your UBM email real quick - I sent a [future] Design West Photo :-) I tried to post it here but I can't seem to post photos in the chat...
I think the hats should sing so you dont lose any drinking time...
She told me that (largely based on our Cap-Net project), she is going to hold a "Geek Headgear" competition -- with a cash prize I think
I will put something together over the weekend then max, it was really interesting.
@Max, "There's still time to [sign up to] present a paper"
Maybe we can talk offline. I don't like overcommitting, thus my hesitation. But I guess I really don't know what is expected for a paper.
Earlier this morning I was talking to the lady who is heading up the conference (making sure she knew that the wireless net beanie hat presentation was going to be in my "Processors and Programmable Devices" track
@duane: "What? More?!!"
Thanks Duane :-)
@adam: "..and will be writing a blog about it if it is of interest"
OF COURSE it's of interest
"What more"? You cry!
Yes, More!!!
@max I spent the last few days at the European Sapce Agency FPGA user conference and will be writing a blog about it if it is of interest
But wait -- there's more...
@warren: "Will singing be required too?"
Of course -- have you forgotten the words already -- it goes "Beer, beer, beer..."
@rfindley: There's still time for you to put your name down to present a paper about moving your beural networks into a Zynq (which will guarentee my being able to persuade Xilinx to rush you a Zynq board :-)
@Warren, once you learn the "Beer,Beer,Beer" song, you won't NOT want to sing.
Will singing be required too?
@rfindley: "Q: Do you use the motorized beanies to help blow froth?"
That's what I loke to see -- a man who thinks on his feet and sees all of the implications :-)
Q: Do you use the motorized beanies to help blow froth?
I'm doing my happy dance (it's not a pretty sight)
@Warren: "Hopefully in time for April gathering at the conference..."
That's the point -- he's bringing hats for all the APP speakers -- the onlt thing is that we have to attend his talk wearing out hats so he can demonstrate them...
Furtherore, he's going to present a paper on in in the "Processors and Programmable Devices" track (of which I am the chair) -- of course the Wireless / Communications track will moan and groan, but he's mine, mine I tell you!!!
Hopefully in time for April gathering at the conference...
Oh, that's great! Please post a blog (w/photos, videos) of the project! That's too funny...
Cap-Net is the name of our wireless mesh network in APP / WAOFB beanie hats
He is going to implement the "Cap-Net" project....
2nd guess - free demo kits for all WAOFB members? :-)
@Brian: "Let me guess - free demo kits for all APP members? :-)"
No, but thanks for asking...
We all get a free trip to the pub?
I was talking to the CTO of Synapse Wireless this morning -- by some strange quirk of fate he's also a member of the WAOFB -- in fact he and his wife are going an a walking tour in the UK next year and they will be visiting the same pub that was in this picture
Let me guess - free demo kits for all APP members? :-)
My last question is do you recall us talking about Synapse Wireless and their low-power wireless networks?
@Max: Re: Networked hats...
Here we go again (from last week)! You could use a SNAP mesh network - it would automatically establish the network amongst like hats! :-)
@Jezmo: "I thought max was paying for the flights as well, that's what he told me ..."
In your dreams :-)
So...... do you believe I have magical powers of persuasion...?
I thought max was paying for the flights as well, that's what he told me ...
@Adam: "do we have a offical drinking song"
Of course -- we discussed this also in the chat a coupl eof weeks ago -- the refrain is "Beer, beer, beer...."
@max was that not the important news
@Adam: drink one for me (at Max's expense, of course :-)!
@Adam: "max said he would be buiyng the beers ;)"
Let's not get off-topic -- I have some important news to impart here....
@max do we have a offical drinking song
Just having the hats networked is a lot more practical than actually having them fly, but it's a fun mental exersize anyway.
The quad copters so popular these days, of course, use four motors, but that wouldn't really work in this instance. So I'm thinking a set of four small movable vanes that would direct airflow for stability and navigation.
@Brian: "I sense significant beer-drinking activities... :-)"
Well, since all members of APP are (by kind permisson of the supreme commander) honary members of the WAOFB, I think you might be right :-)
@brian max said he would be buiyng the beers ;)
The thing is that in outr chat (last week? the week before?) we were saying tha tit woud lbe a cool idea to have the hats wirelessly networked such that the propellors woudl start to spin and LED start to flash when members got close to each other....
@Max: Re: "it looks like several APP members will be presenting papers at the Design West conference next April -- Adam, Jeremy, Duane, and Myself for sure"
I sense significant beer-drinking activities... :-)
You may also recall that a chapter of the WAOFB in the UK added motors to their Beanie Hats (Click Here to see a picture)
thanks Brian...I will take a look at it.
Max - re headgear: Yes. I remember that. I'm working through my head some thoughts on how to make one actually fly. I may not quite get around to it, but if I could get a contra rotating propeller setup and a pancake motor, I could probably do it.
Max if you think I am wearing that...
You may also recall that this is the official head gear of the "Worshipful Ancient Order of Froth Blowers" (whose mission is t oblow the froth of a lot of beer and then drink it).
By some strange quirk of fate, I am supreme commander of both organizations
@embedded: Re: "So the embedded device will be placed in the field monitoring and collecting data."
Well, I hate to bring up last weeks' chat topic again, but you might checkout the Synapse Wireless SNAP product line. They have products that will allow you to monitor/control remotely and connect to the internet... Again, not enough details about your application to know for sure if this is a good solution or not. See last week's chat and let me know if you need a link to it.
Max it is impressive so many are coming from APP. the beers will def flow
Next, do you remember a coupl eof weeks ago when we were talking about the official headgear of All Programmable Planet -- the Propeller Beanie?
Max - re: DesignWest, several members. Very cool. I'll have my second up tonight.
Adam -- some comments seem to get lost -- copy them before you press the "post" button just in case
Well, first let me remind everyone that it looks like several APP members will be presenting papers at the Design West conference next April -- Adam, Jeremy, Duane, and Myself for sure
My hello post has gone missing
@max abstracts all signed off by company will upload them later
You are keeping me in suspenders
What's the great news Max?
@Crusty: Re: "every day is happy when you are retired"
I am jealous! Each day, I am one day closer to death and retirement; I am so hopeful that the latter comes first! :-)
well, I was talking to one of the prospective customer on a solution.
So the embedded device will be placed in the field monitoring and collecting data. The data need to be sent over internet to the server where server ca do further analysis. Now HTTP may not make sense as few hundred web server need to to be looked. So my question is how to I send data to server.
OK -- I have some REALLY GREAT NEWS!!!
@embedded: that's too long to answer in detail here, but I can give you some thoughts (and I'm sure the others can chime in also). The problem is that Ethernet packets are pretty big -- several thousand bytes -- embedded devices typically don;t want to be sending Ethernet packets -- so you use a stripped down protocol on the embedded device -- remind me tomorrow (max@clivemaxfield.com) and I will try to find you a column I wrote about this some time ago...
Hopefully I should know quite quickly if my submission has been accepted for design west
We need more info before we can answer that embedded
@Crusty -- you are cruel -- I dream of being retired (in my dream I'm also fabulously wealth, of course)
Good morning / afternoon / evening
what is the better way to trasfer data from embedded device to server over ethernet
Hi Embedded -- question away...
@Max every day is happy when you are retired
Hi Myplanet -- I finally got down to the post office this morning -- your books are on their way to you -- then when I got back to my office the Iternet was down, so I had to race home, which is where I am now...
I have qustion for all...
Hi everyone -- Happy Thursday!!!
So what's the news which is going to blow my socks off max ?
Oh noes always with the clothing :(
Our weekly chat will commence at 12:00 p.m. my time (Central USA Time), which is 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and 6:00 p.m. UTC/GMT (you'll have to work out your local time from these clues).
As always, we will be following our usual practice of leaping from topic to topic with the agility of young, fearless mountain goats, so make sure you're wearing appropriate clothing!

Can statistical or heuristic verification really work for FPGA designs?
One of the things I've been wondering is whether or not the "okWireOR" module is really just a giant OR, or if the order in which things are attached matters.
I am shocked and horrified. It appears that those little scamps at Planet Analog are writing blogs pertaining to field-programmable issues.
This week's live online chat takes place on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Duane has decided that the time is ripe to get his ZedBoard bolted onto his robot with a Linux distribution up and running. That was the ultimate plan anyway, so why wait?
