Ooo. I think I missed it this week.
d'oh
@intseeker: what!? This IS serious business :-) Bye...
OK Everyone -- I have sooooooo much to do -- back to work -- see you next week -- hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend
Re: Crusty in 3rd person - I really thought this exchange was funny - Crusty in 3rd person - and it all started in the chats :-)
@duane: Max's cameras will probably be able to see through my OCT anyway.
Not to mention yje X-ray glasses I purchased from an advert on the back of a Superman comic :-)
@ALL@APP: This is too much fun! But I have serious business to take care of now.
Tchau!
@cfelton: Yes, they were great
Hang on -- you were the one who sent them to me :-)
Intseeker - Max's cameras will probably be able to see through my OCT anyway.
@dunae: ...as long as the batteries don't wear out.
That reminds me of a great joke -- but too long to tell here -- remind me at DESIGN West and Iill tell it (if you're not careful)
Brian says bye to Crusty and Mrs. Crusty.
optical camouflage technology (OCT) " as long as the batteries don't wear out."
So you don't even believe their ar autonomous?
Intseeker - as long as the batteries don't wear out.
@Duane: optical camouflage technology (OCT)
Do you trust this disguise?
Max - Well, invisibility is, to a large degree, a state of mind.
@Duane: I'll be wearing my optical camouflage technology (OCT) cloak...
That's what Adam thinks after he's had three beers :-)
@cfelton Trick is to look for earlier editions I thought edition 3 would not change much by edition 5 for the beginners stuff
The Designers Guide to VHDL Peter J.Ashenden
Pretty pricey for the used ones. I suppose it is excellent!?
@Crusty: But not Sandles and socks we hope?
Perish the thought
Most ofthe time in the summer I go barefoot (both at home and here in my office)
@all, did anyone notice when a *cheap* book is referred on the site, the price changes drastically? There must be a few people pouncing on the recommendations and most sites use adaptive pricing.
@cfelton: It's on the Wednesday in the morning Click Here for more details (once I have all the speakers tied down I'll add all of their bios)
I'll be wearing my optical camouflage technology (OCT) cloak so I may not appear in the photographs.
@Max The Designers Guide to VHDL Peter J.Ashenden
@Crusty: I got a copy via a second hand book shop in America about 10 dollars with shipping
I've lost track -- what book are you talking about?
@max "we need to touch base about that "languages" talk at Design West"
Can I assume this will occur on M,T,or W? There is a good chance I will only be attending these days.
@Max But not Sandles and socks we hope?
@Max: Re: not JUST a Hawaiian shirt!
And the world can't thank you enough for that!! :-)
@Crusty: All not attending Design West expect the pictures of those attending to be displayed in a rogues gallery.
Count on it :-)
Re: Here's the second pic or Adam trilling away
The funny thing is that he was singing songs about APP! :-)
@Max: Here's the second pic or Adam trilling away (Click Here)
As long as he is in blue dress shirt, he is ready to sell anything, even his soul to the girls (grin)
@Brian: ...ask Max and the answer would be a Hawaiian shirt! :-)
I shoudl note that I also wear shorts and sandles -- not JUST a Hawaiian shirt!
@Duane I like the book as it is readable and uses examples others haven't used, not copying other texts.
I think if you follow the book through you would be able to build the code for a soft core processor.
@Max: Here's the First pic of Adam warbeling
Hllarious!
@Brian: ...too bad I didn't know about their Decatur store - I am 8.5 miles from Decatur!!
I know, you would have loved it -- it's a pity you couldn;t come down with me yesterday afternoon
Here's the second pic or Adam trilling away (Click Here)
The worrying thing is that this was after his first beer -- you shoudl have seen him after his second :-)
Crusty - I can RENT a Kindle edition from Amazon for $23.00 :-(
Here's the First pic of Adam warbeling (Click Here)
@Duane I will send the link for the American book seller found them through Abe Books in England
@Max: too bad I didn't know about their Decatur store - I am 8.5 miles from Decatur!!
Crusty - I found some on Amazon but for in the $40.00 range.
@Max All not attending Design West expect the pictures of those attending to be displayed in a rogues gallery.
@All -- give me a momment to upload them
@Brain I am going to go see him in sheffield when he is back and see if he is wearing one there
@adam: ...how else are you supposed to look engineer like ;)
The Einstein-like hair and the pocket protector filled with screwdrivers?
@Max, Adam: we DEMAND the karaoke photos!
Just be thankful you cannot hear me, I set the bar re assuringly low I was told
@max why else do you think I sent them
@Duane I got a copy via a second hand book shop in America about 10 dollars with shipping
@Adam: it depends on the engineer. As an example, ask Max and the answer would be a Hawaiian shirt! :-)
Adam -- can I show the others your kareoke pics?
I picked up an 800x600 TFT LCD a while back that talks with LVDS. At some point, it's on my list to get working.
@brian how else are you supposed to look engineer like ;)
@Max your last blog went down really well -- so i very much look forward to seeing one on 7 segment displays
I expect this by line to be a scorcher for comment will start penning it over the next few days
... they invited me to go down for a private showing next weekend -- so I can wander around rooting through all that old stuff before anyonje else gets to see it :-)
@Max: Looks interesting, the LVDS, and I'm looking forward to reading it to the end. However, I thought this issue of cross talk was well understood since I was in college! But to be fair, because I've been always a little bit more excited about digital electronics, formal controls, and maxwell equations, I didn't ever forget about it, because I had a college friend (we're are still very close, he in Brazil and me here in the US) who is an analog electronics maniac. In his doctoral studies he did a project where he got logic gates and found ways of linearizing the transistors behavior inside the chip! Can you believe someone like this?
Bye Adam - have a great Friday and weekend! (Glad you found the suit! Grrr... hate suits... :-)
Crusty - I saw that receommendation, but I havem't gotten a copy of the book yet.
Hi Duane -- it really is an incredible store -- and there's still more!!!
They have another store -- 22,000 squate feet that's jam-packed with stuff -- in Decatur, which is about 20 miles away -- the father who owned all of thsi passed away aboyt 6 months ago --- they are closeing the Decature store and moving everything over to the Huntsville store and...
We used to have a few good ones here. We had Wacky Willy's electroncis surplus. The had two locations and as far as I can tell are gone now. One of my favorites in years past was teh Tek country store. Lot's of ggo surplus stuf from the back alleys of Tektronics. Sadly, it's gone now too.
@Duane: I still haven't been. The sad thing is that I stopped bu Max's office on the way out of town to say "hi" and grab a coffee. He was headed to that store about an hour later. I would have LOVED to have gone to the store - but, work had been stacking up all morning... I'll make it over there one of these days...
Hi Duane, Have you tried the Designers Guide to VHDL
Right gents I need to leave work and go home so will catch you all next week I hope
@Crusty -- your last blog went down really well -- so i very much look forward to seeing one on 7 segment displays
Max - That looks like an awesome store
@ Adam; Keeping well and I hope to induce Max to show my latest beginners offering as a "Hello Crusty" in 7 segment displays
Mrs, Crusty well, Number one son gone home with his hand made long bow, Now have Number one Daughter guesting at the ancestral Home
Re that Electronics Store -- I returned yesterday and discovered an incredible portable TV circa the 1950s -- it's sort of oval-ish -- looks like the sort of thing you woudl have seen on "The Jetson's -- and it still works!
@crusty evening hope you are keeping well
@Max: Re: the third image on the first page
No, I think it makes perfect sense. It explains why positive AND negative glitches could cause problems (depends on whether the signal was high or low at the time).
@Max not at all it was a good explaination, maybe the newbies need to understand a little about logic thresholds as well though
Whoever suggested getting a copy of The Designers Guide to VHDL I wish to thank, It's unloking a lot of my problems (FPGA) that is.
Hi Crusty (and hi to Mrs Crusty)
Hi Crusty!! How's Mrs. Crusty??
@adam: do you think I was being too pedantic including the third image on the first page -- showing that the same noise spikes may/may not cause problems depinding on whether the signal itself is 0 or 1?
I added this in because I was thinking that beginners might not think of this
@All: Please do bounce over to my LVDS Column and comment on it
indeed it is, I will have to send you the karoake pictures
@Adam: ...a flagon of ale or two washed down with soju and whiskey
We call that "Breakfast" in Yorkshire :-)
LOL I did actually find it in the end, brian you know what nights in itaewon are like. I must say the young ladies of your airforce were fun to drink with....
@Max: good point. That's real bad... There's some dude walking around Itaewon in Adam's suit - and, he got it cheap! :-)
@Max: I was too busy ignoring you (grin). Actually, I was just working on the weekly newsletter for the EE Times Programmable Logic Designline website -- I sent that off for proofing just 20 seconds before thsi chat started...
That's OK, Max, the video tutorial on the crystal install is not done yet. Problems moving the Quick Time video from the iPad to the video editor.
Max it was not one beer but rather a flagon of ale or two washed down with soju and whiskey.
@Brian: ...we can't wait until the chat after DW to hear about how you drank Max under the table
Remember that thsi is the man who ordered (and paid for) a suit and then had a beer and the next day couldn't remember where he's ordered it from.
I'm not anticipating any problems :-)
MAx just commented on your LVDs article ;) I love that technology
@intseeker: Re "I was too busy writing to Max behind the scenes"
I was too busy ignoring you (grin). Actually, I was just working on the weekly newsletter for the EE Times Programmable Logic Designline website -- I sent that off for proofing just 20 seconds before thsi chat started...
LOl max quite happy to.
I went for a few beers in itaewon, and bought a made to measure suit to be picked up the next day. Then proceeded to get rather drunk as is the way and could remember where we had bought the suits from
@Adam: we can't wait until the chat after DW to hear about how you drank Max under the table :-)
@Max: if they're being printed, then you could post a picture... Are you holding out??
@Adam: Hi there -- welcome back from Korea -- how was your trip (do you want to share the story about that suit you ordered?)
flying visit I am afraid, but not been for a few weeks so thought I would say hi
@shakeeb: The APP Members Card is being printed as we speak -- ping me again next week -- we shoudl be seeing them soon
@ALL: Hi everyone! Sorry for being late. I was too busy writing to Max behind the scenes. :0)
Things are busy! So busy that I feel like the intro to your designline editor's notes! :-)
@cfelton- yep its early in the morn,
@max - im not that luck to stay away frm work 2morow , but im used to it. By da way wats up with the APP card ?
Hi Brian -- how are things - -it was great to see you here in my office yesterday
@skakeeb: Thank you so much for staying up so late for this -- I hope you're not working tomorrow
Heloo Brian wishin u da same :)
@shakeeb, wow 1am. I pull of the late nights once in awhile. But I pay for it dearly a couple days later.
Hello everyone! Happy Thursday!
@Max im here too, its almost 01 am here lol
@cfelton: Things are going great -- just juggling a whole lot of "stuff"
@max, do you know what day that will occur on?
@max sounds good, originally you mentioned "python" talke about the core languages, either is fine.
how is it going max? I am slaving away at the gulag.
@cfelton -- we need to touch base about that "languages" talk at Design West -- it's now "10 languages in 45 minutes" -- and i still have you down for the "MyHDL" part
Our weekly chat will commence at 12:00 p.m. my time (Central USA Time), which is 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and 6:00 p.m. UTC/GMT (you'll have to work out your local time from these clues -- or you can use this handy-dandy Time Zone Converter).
As always, we will be following our usual practice of leaping from topic to topic with the agility of young, fearless mountain goats, so make sure you're wearing appropriate clothing!

My goal is to hold a chess-playing extravaganza at Design West 2014, in which FPGA-based and/or MCU-based "Robots" compete for a grand prize.
In addition to applications for reprogrammable hardware and processors in the Internet of Things, it also seems as if there will be a growing need to embed pieces of FPGA-like fabric into SoCs.
Colors are simply names we give to specific wavelengths or combinations of wavelengths that are received by our eyes. Maybe we each see colors differently.
Now we are ready to bring all the parts together and construct the GPS-driven, FPGA-decoded Nixie tube speedometer for use in a 1953 International pickup truck.
Here's an image of the week and a joke of the week. Also, this week's live online chat takes place Thursday, June 20, at 1:00 p.m. ET (10:00 a.m. PT).
